Big Dreams Big Ideas: The new Canadian social product development company

Big Dreams Big Ideas has just hit the Canadian stage with their new and innovative social product development company, and they are looking for you to become their next great inventor.

But wait! your probably saying something like... "What the heck is social product development?"

And we are saying... "What, you have never heard of it?" No worries. The reality is most people haven't. The concept of SPD is extremely new.

Essentially, social product development is the process of bringing together hundreds if not thousands of individuals to help create, develop, brand, and even finance new product ideas. It essentially leverages on crowdsourcing to bring a product from idea to inception.

In February of 2012 Vancouver based Big Dreams Big Ideas opened up shop as the first Canadian social product development company, and they are ready to make you their next great inventor. "It was my mission to create a business that would help empower the everyday person to bring their ideas to reality," says owner and creator Dean Horsfield. He continued, "not everyone has the connections or the money (often $100,000+) to develop an idea, create the prototype, and find the investors to help them bring it to market. With Big Dreams Big Ideas, becoming a famous inventor is finally possible for anyone."

So far we like it. So how does it all work? Here is the skinny:

Visit http://www.bigdreamsbigideas.ca and create an account.
Submit a product idea, or browse the site and vote or offer feedback on other people's ideas.
Each idea is listed for a 30 day period, if your idea is top voted in any of those 4 weeks, it will move to the finalist round. Once in the finalist round, the top vote idea will move onto the Product Round and become Big Dreams Big Ideas next product.
In the Product Round each idea will be designed, branded, and partially financed b the community. Everyone who is involved will earn a portion of the gross revenues of the final product sales.
All others that are involved in voting and offering feedback will earn points redeemable for submitting free ideas, buying products, and investing in new products.

The pros are you can make a lot of money. The cons, it costs $10 to submit each idea. The company page states that this policy is in place to stop spammers and ensure only quality ideas are submitted. They also state that a quick message on any of their social media sites will earn you a FREE IDEA coupon. We quickly gave it a try, and I'll be damned, it worked!

I haven't submitted an idea yet, but I will soon. I have a bunch rolling around in my head. I will report on the success. The Best Western hotel chain has decided to open their books and reveal some of the most unusual hotel requests. We could not resist the urge to dig through them and present a few of our favorites.

One organization requested circus training for all of it’s employees.
A private meeting room for men who wanted to wear baby gowns.
A group of travelers requested a menu consisting entirely of blue food.
A lawnmower convention that required lawn space to test each of the mowers.
Pet lovers who requested Reiki classes for the gods, and ajoining rooms so each could have their own bed.
A sex addict support group requested rooms with single beds, and a dedicated staff member to make sure they went to bed alone.
7 foot beds for a group from Great Britain that only has members over 6 feet tall.

Good For Grapes is Good for Vancouver

Twenty-five representatives from some of Canada's biggest names in music turned out at a Toronto studio on August 19th to hear a new, young Vancouver-area band that's quickly gained nation-wide traction. Following two national victories in both the Roger's Music Battle of the Bands and Supernova's "Band on the Run to the UK, Surrey-based 'Good For Grapes' attracted the likes of EMI and Warner Music, Feldman, Finkelstein and more who came and stayed for a 6-song showcase of their original folk-fusion at Coalition Studios.

Good For Grapes is a folk inspired band of young 17 to 19-year olds whose sound bears strong emphasis on vocal harmonies and steady rhythms fronting complex but 'radio-friendly' tracks.

Since forming only 11 months ago, the Grapes (Daniel McBurnie, Graham Gomez, Alexa Unwin, Sean Mackeigan, Robert Hardie and Jesse Brook) have quickly built a regional following from a series of high-energy, live performances and feature interviews on Cable Four's "CloseLook."

The originality of using acoustic instruments, including accordion and trombone, has been behind all the buzz they've generated from the Lower Mainland to Ontario. After winning two national competitions within only four months, Good For Grapes was flown to Toronto by Supernova in an all-expenses paid trip to record at Coalition Studios (Our Lady Peace, Simple Plan, Finger Eleven).

The Toronto trip saw Good For Grapes play the first ever private showcase at Coalition for EMI, Warner, SL Feldmen & Associates, The Agency Group, Coalition Entertainment, Arts & Crafts, Bumstead Productions Ltd, Alert Music, Epic Productions, Finkelstein, and Supernova Entertainment. Private meetings followed and the band left with 'tons of positive feedback' and industry reps intent on tracking their progress.

Good For Grapes has already recorded a 6 song EP, which has been highlighted in several reviews and has generated strong sales between i-Tunes and their live appearances. The three new tracks they launched at Coalition are now being completed at Vancouver's own Greenhouse Studios. The finished product will go back to the organizations that saw them play in Toronto and will be looking for a debut on Vancouver radio.

In the local community, Good For Grapes has been involved with many charities and Organizations including Cops for Cancer, SPCA Paws for a Cause, The Lower Mainland Down Syndrome Society, and the People's Foundation for Sierra Leone.

Interview with Trish Stratus: Fate, Yoga, and Everything in Between

Just when you thought the Good News couldn't get any better, we stepped it up a notch by tracking down Trish Stratus on her latest trip to Vancouver. The former WWE Diva, fitness guru, yoga master, and simply all round awesome girl took an hour out of her day to speak with me, and I have to say... that was one of the best hours of my life!

We talked about everything! Fate, yoga, the WWE, her new movie, healthy eating, the Stratusphere, and everything in between. It all happens here, right now. Check it out.

Here we go. I am sitting here with the lovely and fantastic Trish Stratus. Thank you for taking the time to meet with me.
Thank you for having me.

First off, I want to go all the way back to the beginning of your career. I read somewhere that you were a biology/kinesiology major at one point? Is this true?
Yes, that is true. I was a pre-med student and I was steadfast doing all the volunteer and prep work to become a doctor. Everything I was doing in my life was geared towards becoming a doctor, and then all of a sudden the University professors went on strike. I was like, “Uh-oh, now what? I have a plan, what’s going to happen?”

I didn’t trust in the Universe at the time because I was like, “how could you do this to me Universe?” And then I took a job at a gym. I thought I would just kill some time until school came back in session. And then, well that was when I started to trust in the Universe and understood that everything happens for a reason. It was during this strike that I got approached to do my very first gig in the fitness industry.

So how were you approached?
Someone from the gym who was partners with Robert Kennedy the publisher of Oxygen Magazine - they were working together launching a fitness clothing line. He approached me about being the face of this clothing line and told me about fitness modeling, which at the time was a new emerging industry, where the models were athletes - fit, healthy, feminine and beautiful women. This was how I was introduced to Robert Kennedy and the world of fitness modeling.

When I met with Robert Kennedy, he said that he wanted to do a test shoot with me since I had no previous modeling experience. Following my first test shoot, he offered me an opportunity to do my first professional photo shoot and he said to me, “I’m booking your shoot in 6 months, so you need to do the training that is involved to build your physique.” And so I started training with weights for the first time with a trainer. I basically ate, slept and trained until my shoot day and I totally transformed my body. Actually, I put my bio/kine education to good use, I was a live experiment!

So what was the key to your physical transformation?
It was the science of nutrition that really made the difference. I think that is something a lot of people miss out on. Results depend a lot on what you are eating. All the work you put into your body with exercise materializes based on how you fuel your body.

Any tips on healthy eating?
Yes, definitely. Always give yourself some time for your body to get rid of the old and bring in the new. I like to tell people to give themselves at least a month for the body to adapt and see changes. You know what they say, that it takes 28 days for old habits to break and new ones to form. Then, the key is eating simple, natural, whole foods. If I know that the food is in its most natural form, then I know that its okay, my body will be able to process it.

So you transformed your body, made the cover of Oxygen Magazine, and everything started to happen?
Kind of! In 1998, I landed my first cover and was signed to a contract by Robert Kennedy after my first shoot and suddenly I found myself with a career. Being signed by one of the industry’s biggest publishers and the fact that I was part of this burgeoning fitness modeling industry in its beginning stages was a big part of it. There were a lot of new fitness companies and lots of opportunities to work with other people that were excited to grow and expand the world of fitness. Really, a great example of how timing is everything.

At that point did it really sink in that you had achieved true celebrity status?
The thing is even with WWE, my world was so busy with the training and the travel, you sometimes forget what you are creating around you – outside of your bubble. It would take something like seeing myself on the cover of a magazine on the newsstand, or someone at the store stopping you and saying ‘You inspired me to lose weight and be healthier’ to really have it sink in. Very cool to have those moments for sure.

Skipping ahead, you retired from the WWE in 2006 and got into yoga? Due to an injury?
Yes, well, I was introduced to yoga a few years earlier while still with WWE. It was at a time when I was dealing with a herniated disc and faced with the possibility of it ending my career. WWE had me written out of the show so I could have surgery and return back ASAP. But, I decided to look into other options rather than go under the knife. So, we decided to give a physiotherapy program a try. It was after 2 months of physiotherapy and not seeing much progress that I explored yoga as an alternative to my therapy. I noticed an improvement in my condition right away and so I devoted myself to a daily practice. In less than 3 months I had fully recovered and eventually made a full return to the ring.

So it worked and you stuck with it?
Definitely. And, even once I returned to wresting I found I was experiencing such positive benefits just by doing a simple thing like making yoga part of my daily routine. It allowed me to recover quicker, and really allowed me to be a better performer all round. I actually got to the point where I would plan my travel for the tours around yoga studios - finding which ones were close to the arenas. That’s the point where I knew yoga would someway, somehow always be a part of my life.

And from that, you now have your own studio, Stratusphere (www.stratusphereyoga.com). One of the things the studio promotes is being eco-friendly. Can you tell us a bit about that?
Everything from the choice of materials, such as bamboo floors, eco-friendly paint, and everything in between. My husband did the construction and building from the ground up, we had the power to choose to build green.

What type of clientele does the studio attract?
It’s really cool; we see all types of people at the studio. It’s a real testament to how versatile yoga is. What has really worked at the studio has been creating specialty programs so we truly can offer something for everyone. I’ve designed a number of proprietary programs that I believe is what sets our studio apart from others.

What types of programs?
Well, in an effort to attract more guys to the idea of doing yoga, I created a “Guys Who Like Fries” yoga class. Because I thought, you don’t have to be this perfectly bendy athletic type to do yoga; it is good for anyone – including guys! And this is what has really worked, knocking down preconceived notions of what yoga is and who it is for. That has sort of been my mission since I opened the studio 3 years ago.

I also launched Stratusphere Golf a couple years ago which is a yoga sequence I designed based on the movements and muscles used during the game of golf. It’s pretty cool, you do the whole class with a golf club in hand, it’s been really well received at the studio. The most recent program that has sort of become our champion program is - Stratusphere Yoga. I basically drew from my background in the fitness world and integrated resistance training movements into a yoga flow.

So it combines fitness and yoga?
Exactly. It was a happy accident how I developed this program. I filmed an action movie last year called Bounty Hunters (Watch the Trailer here) and I wanted to get more toned for the role. Being a huge multi-tasker, instead of making the time to do weight training and my yoga, I basically combined them and created a full body workout that hits every muscle group in 50 minutes!

So, I am one of those people who is not flexible, not patient, and really doesn’t like posing. How would I transition into yoga?
I think you ran into the same thing I did - I got bored. That is when I realized that yoga needed to incorporate poses, cardio, and weight training to make it interesting and to keep my body guessing. I think people want more out of their yoga practice nowadays, and so I created this system that gives you the best of both the fitness world and the yoga world.

I read that you teamed up with HoMedics and created your own product line?
Yes. After my yoga sequence took off so well at the studio, I decided to produce a video last year. I teamed up with HoMedics initially to create the gloves that I use in my “Stratusphere Yoga” workout. It was a natural evolution to then create the mats, yoga blocks, yoga towel and ‘nuTrishion’ journal. That’s how Stratusphere Living was born. It’s been a lot of work getting here; to develop a brand but it feels like I’ve truly come full circle. I’m so thankful to be able to take something that has been a part of my life for so long and continue to spread the message about health and fitness. It’s really exciting to now be launched in stores!

Tell me more about these gloves?
Well, I call it the FitGlove. It has grips on one side so you don’t slip in poses like downward dog and a one pound weight on the top to add resistance to your workout. The great thing is, they have so many uses, I use them during my runs and weight training as well.

I also have a kit I created that I am really excited about. People have been asking me for years how to set up a proper fitness program. Basically, this kit has everything you need to start: the mat, the DVD, and also a nutrition guide. The guide is the actual template that I have used myself for the last 10 years – it has been a key tool in helping me keep up my fitness program over the years.

I’m excited to try it.

The Barking Bird

According to a surprising discovery made in 1988, there are actually birds that bark! The Antpitta avis canis Ridgley, look like a black and white ducks on stilts. Only a total thirty of these barking birds were found in Ecuador by ornithologist Robert S. Ridgley. Until 1988 they were undetected because of their remote habitats and the fact that they did not sing!

In contrast, there are also dogs that do not bark. The silky copper colored dogs named the Basenji actually yodel! Yes, as strange as it sounds, these dogs yodel when excited!

The New Year Brings Free Performing Arts Program to Vancouver East Side

It is always great to see the local community get involved in promoting and fostering creativity in those who might not otherwise have the opportunity. Project Limelight Society has announced that the first session of Project Limelight, a free theatre program for youth in the Strathcona neighbourhood, will be launched January 28th 2012.

Aimed at youth who are driven to perform, Project Limelight is a free, after school program that runs three days a week. By working with professional artists and instructors, children aged 8-15 are given the skills and the space they need to explore their creative potential.

Motivated to give back, sisters Maureen Webb and Donalda Weaver founded Project Limelight to support the East Vancouver community where they were raised. Donalda has worked as a CMA for years, and owned Second Avenue Studios, one of the largest casting studios in Canada. Maureen launched her career in the film industry over 25 years ago in a small office in the Downtown Eastside. Now a prominent casting director, Maureen has received an outpouring of support from her community, including the film industry. Cory Monteith, one of the stars of Glee, has supported Maureen’s vision since its inception.

“What’s unique about Project Limelight is that it gives teachers, artists and innovators the opportunity to give back to the community, while also providing new opportunities for young people.” Cory Monteith.

In 2002, Maureen co-founded a children’s theatre program on Vancouver Island, and it was this experience that gave her a glimpse of the world she wanted to create. The focus at Project Limelight is on enthusiasm and passion; no experience is necessary.

“Our hope is that every child in our program walks away with a widened circle of friends, an increased sense of self, and a heightened curiosity. Nothing would please us more than having participants come back to the program as mentors.” Maureen Webb.

Project Limelight will host an introductory workshop at Strathcona Community Centre on January 14th 2012 at 11am for interested participants. You must call to register before January 10th, 2012 as space is limited.

I will… Pay off my credit card (because this couldn’t have been done before making it a New Years resolution)

The Top 10 Cities to Spend New Year’s Eve

We are closing in on the expiry date for the year 2010, and what a year it was! From the Olympics, to the World Cup, to the release of Harry Potter (a milestone event for many!), 2010 seemed to have it all.

Given how epic the year was, an epic New Year’s bash is a must. We got the lowdown for you on the Top 10 NYE party cities across the globe.

(In no particular order)

10. Tokyo
Given the excessive time difference (17 hours), you could seemingly spend New Year's Eve in Tokyo, and catch a flight straight back to Vancouver and celebrate it here as well. While we don’t foresee many people going this route, it’s still intriguing nonetheless!

The streets, restaurants, and clubs are all packed with people as their New Year’s celebration carries over all the way until the 4th of January. Join the locals and enter the New Year in traditional Japanese style by eating Toshikoshi Soba (New Years Eve Noodle) and listening to Juya No Kane (The Watch-Night Bell). You only get one shot a year at eating “New Year's Eve Noodle”, so we strongly advise you take advantage of it.

9. Sydney

Celebrate your New Years before everyone else and party with a million people at the Harbor. Sound too good to be true? Not in Sydney.

Every New Years, stunning fireworks light up the sky over the Sydney Harbor Bridge as over a million people come together to ring in the New Year. While there are many great vantage points, the best place to see the show is on of the boats in the Habour. Partying in Australia, on a boat, with fireworks in the air. See you there.

8. London

No matter what you like to do on New Year's Eve, London has it all. A stunning fireworks show over the beautiful “London Eye” is a must see. The show starts immediately after “Big Ben” rings at Midnight, and lasts for 15 minutes. While there are many great vantage points, the best spot to view the show is on the Westminster Bridge, which faces directly at the “London Eye”.

If partying is your thing, you’re in luck. Pubs, clubs, and restaurants are open late all over the city, bringing in the New Year in style. Theater lovers can also rejoice, as there are great stage shows on New Years Eve that allow all the viewers to ring in the New Year with the cast and crew.

Clearly, there is a little something for everyone in London on NYE!

7. Barcelona

Music, dancing, and a party scene that goes all night long. Need we say more?

The Spanish love to ring in the New Year with style, and they do it by partying for a week straight. Salsa dancing, flamenco dancing, and live music, are among the celebrations that take place all over the city. When the great clock strikes 12 you better be sure to have your appetite, as Old Spanish tradition calls for everyone to eat 12 grapes—one for every bell the great clock rings.

If you can make it to the 5th of January, you’re in luck. On this day, “The Three Kings” arrive by boat at the waterfront of Barcelona and proceed slowly through the city throwing barley sugar sweets to the children lining the route.

Partying, parades, and grapes—what’s not to love about NYE in Barcelona?

6. Paris

Glitz, glam, and fashion. Is there any other way to spend New Years in Paris?

Beautiful fireworks, high-end restaurants, and all night partying highlight the festivities in France’s capital. Start the night by heading to the Champs-Elysees, where you can join thousands of people to watch the Eiffel Tower light up from head to toe and illuminate the entire city. Add a glass of champagne, and this might be one of the most visually appealing moments on the planet on New Years Eve.

5. New York

“The concrete jungle where dreams are made”. If it’s good enough for Jay-Z, it’s gotta be good enough for us.

Join Dick Clarke, Ryan Seacrest, and hundreds of thousands of people in the heart of Times Square to watch the iconic ball drop to signal the coming of the New Year. If you want to get a good view you may have to get to Time Square early, as people begin to flock there around 3PM in the afternoon. I guess this fits with the old saying, “good things come to those who wait”.

4. Las Vegas

Can’t decide where to go for New Years? Take all the thinking out and go to Vegas! Here you can spend your NYE in Paris, New York New York, and Caesar’s Palace.

Known as the party capital of North America, you can never go wrong with spending your NYE in the city of sin. The city that boasts the best shows, entertainers, and parties, there is something for everyone in Las Vegas. However, if the Hangover taught us anything, it’s that “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas”.

3. Miami

Lebron James took his talents to South Beach, and so should you!

If you’re looking to party hard over the New Year, be sure to check out South Beach where on a regular Wednesday, the clubs are packed. Fireworks, dancing, and parties that never seem to stop, South Beach is the place to be on NYE.

Miami provides a double threat on NYE, as families can come to Orlando and spend the New Year with Mickey Mouse and company. Whether its SeaWorld, Universal Studios, or Disney World—all of the theme parks have a lot to offer for any family looking to have a great time. Fireworks at midnight and live entertainment throughout the day highlight the festivities.

2. Toronto

As long as you’re not checking out a Maple Leafs game, you’re sure to have a good time on NYE in Toronto. The “Traditional Toronto New Year's Eve Bash” takes place at Nathan Phillips Square, where thousands of people get together to watch live performances from some of music’s biggest stars. There are hundreds of live performances going on all over the city, so you’re sure to find whatever type of music you’re looking for.

If you’re looking for something romantic, set sail on the Toronto Harbor Cruise where you can enjoy a first class meal and breathtaking views of the city. Not a bad way to say hello to the New Year!

1. New Orleans

Last but certainly not least, New Orleans. This city has it all on New Years Eve and the atmosphere is nothing short of electric. Bourbon Street is alive and well and be sure to join the entire city at midnight to watch the Jackson Ball drop to ring in the New Year.

The best tip we can give you for NYE in New Orleans is to stick with a one colour drink. What does this mean exactly? In the French Quarter, you can find a rainbow selection of coloured drinks and if you’d like your night (and the next morning) to be as pleasant as possible, we suggest picking one colour and sticking to it!

Go Overseas: Volunteer, travel, and make a difference

From South America to Africa, Vancouver locals are making a difference around the world!

If you haven’t heard of the growing trend of “voluntourism” before, get ready to learn: “Voluntourism” is the combination of travel and volunteerism. There are many variations and names for it: eco-tourism, responsible travel, ethical tourism, meaningful travel. Travelers who chose to volunteer abroad make a conscious effort to be more aware of global concerns and the cultures they visit. Popular volunteer trips include activities like helping with homework at orphanages, promoting HIV/AIDS awareness, teaching English, protecting local wildlife, environmental conservation, and more.

Go Overseas is a new website developed to help travelers who are passionate about volunteering and finding adventur. The site regularly publishes articles on international travel, from interviews and tips to personal stories and photo essays. In the past two years, Go Overseas has grown to include thousands of volunteer, intern, study, and teach abroad programs.

The best part about the Go Overseas website is the reviews. They are left by past participants, usually right after they complete their project abroad. From group programs, to backpacking to different volunteer destinations, to volunteering abroad for free, Go Overseas has reviews and information on anything you might be interested in.

“We wanted to create a community for like-minded travelers to share information and experiences,” said Mitch Gordon, president of Go Overseas. “Our aim is to increase the number of people travelling with a Purpose” a motto the website shares.

Local Vancouver travelers (and travelers from all over the world) are featured and interviewed on Go Overseas’ Volunteer Abroad section:

Terri Wingham’s story is an especially inspiring one. After battling with breast cancer in 2010, Terri traveled and volunteered in South Africa. Her “voluntourism” experience gave her the idea to start a nonprofit to support other cancer survivors. Wingham won Go Overseas’ “Leave a Review Contest” this fall, entitling her to a round-the-world airline ticket. Starting in January 2012, she will be traveling around the world to volunteer on almost every continent.

Another Vancouver native volunteered in Rwanda with an organization called Developing World Connections: “Personally, going to Africa was the best thing I have ever done for myself. It is such a personal experience - no one else can live that for you, and it changed me for the better,” said DWC volunteer alumni Shannon Hope. “It made me realize how little I needed to be happy. With only my backpack on my shoulders, the world was my oyster and I was the happiest I have ever been in my life. I would absolutely volunteer with DWC again in a heartbeat.”

Reindeer Profile: Interview with Comet

Our Reindeer Profile Series continues with Comet. Comet is widely regarded as the “bad boy” in the group and is often times in trouble with the law. Santa Claus has gone on record to say he likes the added edge that Comet brings to his Reindeer Corps but isn’t always a fan of Comet’s extracurricular activities. We had a chance to catch up with Comet at the Jay-Z concert in New York City.

GNW: Comet, we are only a handful of days away from Christmas Day. How are you feeling heading into the big day?

Comet: I feel great. I’m here chilling in NYC with my boy Jay-Z and the Rocafella crew trying to have a good time before I head back to the North Pole at the end of the week.

GNW: You’re known throughout the reindeer community as a “bad boy” and “party animal”. Do those labels bother you or do you embrace them?

Comet: I am what I am and I can’t change that. I was talking to my homeboy Tiger Woods about this the other day and he just told me to embrace who I am. The cars, money, women…man it’s who I am. Representing the 213 district

GNW: 213 district? Aren’t you from the North Pole?

Comet: I reside in the California 213 district during the offseason. Me, Snoop Dogg, and Lil Wayne party hard in the LBC.

GNW: Speaking of Snoop Dogg, is it true that you will be featured on his next hit single that’s due out in 2011?

Comet: Yeah man me and Snoop have been talking for years about featuring me on one of his tracks. The timing just worked out perfectly. The single should drop in early 2011.

GNW: You recently had in a run in with the law. The story spread like wildfire and even landed you on the front page of People Magazine. Can you elaborate on that?

Comet: Anytime I leave the North Pole to meet my homies down here, the media is all over me. The night in question that landed me on the front page of People Magazine was totally blown out of proportion. I was out on the town with my girl Lindsay Lohan and things kind of got out of control. The past is the past, and I’m just looking ahead to the future.

GNW: Given Donner’s discipline and attention to detail, there have been a lot of Internet rumors about an ongoing feud between you two. Can you confirm or deny these reports?

Comet: Donner and me are like brothers, man. We ride next to each other on Santa’s sleigh each Christmas. We hold down the middle of the reindeer lineup. Do we have different personalities? Absolutely. But that’s why we work so well together. We’re kind of like a “Fire and Ice” combo.

Reindeer Profile: Interview With Blitzen

Our Reindeer Profile series continues with Blitzen. The veteran of the group, Blitzen is the longest serving reindeer in Christmas history. Santa Claus consults Blitzen on all major personnel decisions and many believe there will be a spot in the front office for the long time vet upon his retirement. We had the pleasure of catching up with Blitzen after his weekly Bingo game.

GNW: First off, I would like to thank you for taking the time to meet with us this week. We know that you are one of the most sought after interviews in the world right now, especially after being named Time Magazine's Person of the Year.

Blitzen: It's my pleasure. Good News Weekly is a great publication, and I jumped at the chance to interview with you guys.

GNW: You are too kind. So let's get straight into the question on everybody's mind; how does it feel to be named Person of the Year?

Blitzen: It is a great honor. I never could have imagined that I would grace the cover of such a prestigious publication.

GNW: There is some controversy that Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg, or Wikileaks' Julian Assange should have been this year's choice. How do you handle the criticism?

Blitzen: I have huge respect for both of them, and their accomplishments. But at the end of the day, while they have managed to inspire millions, over my career I have helped inspire billions - everyone knows who I am. Plus, being part of a team that hands out free toys every year definitely gives me the advantage. [laughing]

Actually, Mark called to congratulate me shortly after the announcement. Mind you, he calls every year trying to get me to put a in good word for him with Santa. For a guy who has it all, he certainly has a long Christmas wish list.

GNW: Any chance you could give us a peak at his list?

Blitzen: [laughing] Maybe later.

GNW: Sounds good. So with Christmas just around the corner, how are you feeling?

Blitzen: I’ve definitely felt better. After so many years, it becomes really tough to stay healthy. I’ve got nagging arthritis in my back and I’m currently seeing a specialist about a hip replacement.

GNW: With all of these injuries and all that you’ve accomplished in the industry, when does the time come when you hang up the antlers for good?

Blitzen: Every year I sit down with my family and we discuss my future. I was heavily considering retiring this year but I received a house visit from Comet, Donner, and Vixen who flew in and urged me to come back for one more year. I couldn’t say no to that.

GNW: Wow that really is something. Do you ever get worried that you may not be able to make it through the entire night? You’ve never missed a house in all of your years in the industry. Does that streak weigh on you at all?

Blitzen: The streak is truly something. When it’s all said and done and I end up in the Hall of Fame, I really believe that will be the most eye-popping part of my career. I never really think about missing a house. When I saddle up and Santa gives me that look, it’s all business from there on in.

GNW: Currently in Canada, they are going through some very cold weather. Will you be able to handle that at your age?

Blitzen: Way back in 1936, we had to persevere through an entire snowstorm across Eastern Canada. 1936 is known worldwide as the “North American Cold Wave” and the weather really took its toll on some of the reindeer. It was tough but we managed to get through it. If I can get through that, I can get through anything. Then again, 1936 was right in the middle of my prime so we’ll see how it all plays out this year.

GNW: You truly are a warrior Blitzen. We wish you the best of luck this year in what may be the last Christmas of your career.

The Most Popular Toys from the 1970's

We all know that the 70’s was a time of change, social revolution, and progress. But did you know that the 1970’s also brought some of the most magically silly, toys the world has ever seen?

With 4 weeks until Christmas, we bring you…

The 1970’s

Lite-Bright actually traces it’s origins back to the times of the caveman. However, instead of using a plastic board they used rocks with holes, and instead of lights, they used feces, dye, and squashed bugs to create a variety of colors when held up in the sunlight. Adapted by Hasbro in the early 70’s, Lite-Brite allows the artist to create a "glowing" picture by placing multi-colored translucent plastic pegs through opaque black paper. Lite-Brite has gone on to sell millions of units, and modern versions even use LCD technology to create the mesmerizing effects.

Tracing it’s roots back to 1946, the Magic 8 Ball was invented by a man named Abe Bookman. The casing was primitive, and the fortune telling powers where not properly harnessed, however, the ball bounced around store shelves for almost 30 years before Mattel picked it up in the early 70's and began mass producing them for the American market.

The Pet Rock is arguably one of the most pointless yet genius toys ever invented. It was in 1975 that Gary Dahl was sitting in a pub with some friends, listening to them complain about the high maintenance of their own pets. He joked that they should get a pet rock, because of course a rock requires no maintenance. After a little more thought Dahl (a marketing executive) began to take the idea seriously. He went home and drafted an "instruction manual" for a pet rock. It was full of puns, gags and plays on words that referred to the rock as an actual pet. The original pet rock was just simple stone from a building supply store, but was packages as a real pet with air holes in the box and a straw bed for the rock’s comfort. The Pet Rock was a brief fad during the 1975 Christmas season, but it made Dahl a millionaire overnight.

Silly String was originally created while developing an aerosol spray cast for limbs, and was called “Squibbly”. Silly String was licensed to and produced by Wham-O and is regarded as the largest selling novelty toy in the world because it is one of the few toys that people buy in multiples, and often. Silly String can propel up to 20 feet, and is used by partygoers, jokesters, and even the military for detecting tripwires and explosive booby traps. In 2004 Silly String was banned in Hollywood on Halloween night, incurring a $1000 fine or 6 months in jail for use, possession, sale, or distribution.

Reindeer Profile: Interview With Donner

With Christmas only a week away, we set our sights on the North Pole and the true stars of the winter season. Yup, the 9 Reindeer that make up Santa's all-star team. It wasn't easy, but we managed to catch up with all of them before the big day began.

We start our Reindeer Profiles with the one and only Donner. Donner is a seasoned Christmas veteran and is known throughout the reindeer ranks as a highly detailed and disciplined reindeer. Donner takes his offseason training very seriously and often finds himself in the gym at least twice a day. We had the pleasure of catching up with Donner in between workouts

GNW: So Donner, we are closing in on Christmas. How are you feeling physically?

Donner: Never felt better. I’m currently working with my personal trainer 7 days a week to make sure I’m in peak physical condition come December 25th. We’ve been doing a lot of core and leg strengthening exercises that are key to having a good performance on Christmas.

GNW: Interesting. Are the other reindeers training as hard as you?

Donner: Nobody trains as hard as Donner. Some of these reindeer think that June and July are the times to relax and go to the beach. Donner doesn’t think that way. Those months in the summertime are when I push myself the hardest. My teammates need to understand this is the only way they will be able to mimic my peak physical condition.

GNW: What type of food do you eat to prepare yourself for the all-nighter that is Christmas?

Donner: Protein shakes. Can’t stop building that muscle mass. People think that they can eat junk food and deserts and they won’t pay the consequences for that. They’re all wrong. A good, strict, and high protein diet is the only way to maintain a high level of physical perfection.

GNW: How does your supreme strength help you when you have to deal with inclement weather?

Donner: When we get up North into the Yukon Territories, it’s my supreme upper body strength that gets us through that tough weather. There isn’t a weather pattern on the planet that I can’t persevere through.

GNW: I saw you on the cover of Men’s Fitness Magazine. What was that like?

Donner: It was great. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Universe 2010 and we were able to trade some good tips on how to stay in good shape. I didn’t get into the reindeer game for the fame and publicity, but it was nice to be recognized.

GNW: Lastly, there is a large amount of confusion surrounding your name. You call yourself “Donner” while others refer to you as “Donder”. What’s the deal?

Donner: I dislike the letter “D” so I removed it from my name. Lets just leave it at that.

GNW: But your name starts with a “D”

Donner: [Looks angrily into the eyes of GNW]

Canadians Invented Hawaiians!

Here is something to warm up your Canadian winter blues. It turns out Canadians invented the Hawaiians.

No, not the people! The Pizza! Yup, that odd little pie that is both sweet and salty, is, well, Canadian… we think. According to Wikipedia (the online encyclopedia), Hawaiian pizza was invented by a man named Sam Panopoulos in the 1960’s.

Sam claims that his restaurant, Satellite Restaurant in Chatham, Ontario, was the first to serve a pizza with ham, cheese, tomato, and pineapple. He and his brother Nick worked together for 50 years building off the reputation of their Hawaiian pizza. Sam was quoted in the London Press defending his reputation of being the inventor of Hawaiian pizza by simply stating, “What do you mean I might have? – I did!”

Some interesting facts about pizza:
The largest pizza ever was recorded by the Guinness Book of World Records in 1990 at the Norwood Pick 'n Pay hypermarket in Johannesburg, South Africa. It was 37.4 meters in diameter and was made using 500 kg of flour, 800 kg of cheese, and 900 kg of tomato puree.

The most expensive pizza ever created was made by the restaurateur Domenico Crolla and sold at an auction for over $3000USD.Ingredients on the pizza included sunblush-tomato sauce, Scottish
smoked salmon, medallions of venison, edible gold, lobster marinated in the finest cognac, and champagne-soaked caviar. YUM!

1960’s

There was something for everyone in the 1960’s. Everything from Etch a Sketch to G.I. Joe, the Easy bake Oven to Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots. Oh yah, this was a good time to be a kid!

The Easy Bake Oven was invented by a prolific toy inventor named Ronald Howes, who worked for the Kenner Products toy company in the 1960’s. The oven made it’s market debut in 1963, using an actual incandescent lightbulb to heat the food. Howes credits his inspiration for the toy to the street vendors who roasted chestnuts in New York City.

Originally invented in France in the late 1950’s by a man named Andre Cassagnes and cwho called it the L’Ecran Magique, it was not until 1960 that the Ohio Art Company brought it to market, advertising it under the new name “Etch a Sketch” just prior to the holiday season.

Tracing it’s roots back to 1964, G.I. Joe became one of the most popular “toys for boys” on the planet, and actually led to the coining of the term “action figure”. The term G.I. stands for Government Issue and Joe stands for the name “Joe”. In the United Kingdom, G.I. Joe was sold under the name Action Man.

Originally manufactured by the Marx Toy Company in 1964, Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots pits two mechanically controlled robot in a fight to see who can knock the other’s head off. Sold in the UK as “Raving Bonkers” the robots dominated every young boys wish list for much of the 60’s and 70’s.

Yahtzee was originally invented in 1954 by an anonymous Canadian couple, who called it "The Yacht Game" because they played it on their yacht with their friends. Two years later they asked game entrepreneur Edwin S. Lowe if he would make up some sets to be given as gifts to their friends who enjoyed the game. Lowe perceived the possibility of marketing the game, and acquired the rights to the game from the couple in exchange for 1,000 gift sets. Over the next 15 years the game would go on to sell over 40 million sets worldwide.

Originally invented in the 1930’s as a wallpaper cleaner, Play-Doh made its market debut as a children’s molding toy in 1956. By 1958 sales had reached $3 million, and in 2003 the Toy Industry Association named Play-Doh to its “Century of Toys List”.

Inspired by a German doll called Bild Lilli, American Businesswoman Ruth Handler and Mattel Inc launched Barbie in March of 1956. The first ever Barbie doll wore a black and white zebra striped swimsuit, the signature ponytail, and was available in blonde and brunette. The success of the doll has always been attributed to it’s uncanny ability to give young children the medium to play ”grown-up” with. And despite numerous copycat versions over the past 50 years, Barbie still remains the most popular doll on the planet.

Although the Hula Hoop’s exact origins are unknown, a plastic version was first successfully marketed in 1957 by California’s Wham-O toy company. During the following threee years over 100 million hoops where sold worldwide. The longest Hula Hoop duration record is held by Roxann Rose of the United States, who went 90 hours between 2 April and 6 April 1987.

Uncovering the origins of kissing under mistletoe.

After weeks of research, several sleepless nights, and a large number of very unhappy girls, the team at Good News Weekly have uncovered the highly secretive origins of kissing under mistletoe during the Christmas season.

The origins of kissing under mistletoe during the holiday season dates back all the way to the early 17th century. Mistletoe is believed to possess a “mystical power” that contains “life-giving” power and has the ability to bring peace between enemies. In Scandinavia, mistletoe was considered a plant of peace, under which enemies could declare a truce or warring spouses could kiss and make-up.

In the 18th century, kissing under mistletoe took on a whole new meaning. It was believed that a young woman standing under mistletoe could not refuse to be kissed, and that a passionate kiss could mean the beginning of a deep romance. On the contrary, if a woman were not kissed while standing under mistletoe, it would mean that she was not able to get married for another full year. Needless to say, Christmas time for young women during the 18th century was filled with equally as much stress as holiday cheer!

Lastly, after every kiss under the mistletoe, the man would have to pluck the berries off the plant. We would strongly advise not bringing back this tradition, as the berries are poisonous and may make the whole process far more trouble than it’s worth!

While the history of mistletoe appears to have been lost, the tradition of kissing under mistletoe still remains today. After all the weeks of research, we have come to one definitive conclusion: Mistletoe is the definitely the “Good News Plant”.

The 1940’s

This was honestly a silly decade to walk down stairs in loners and pairs. Yes the two greatest inventions of all time came from this era: Silly Putty and the Slinky!

The Slinky was originally discovered by a naval mechanical engineer in 1943 who was working on a set of springs that could support sensitive instruments on the ship. He knocked one over and watched it walk down a set of books and settle on the floor. The Slinky hit American markets in 1945 at $1 a piece, and sold the first 400 in just under 90 minutes.

Originally developed in 1943 during World War II as a failed substitute for rubber, Silly Putty would sit on the shelf for almost 6 years before reaching the owner of a toy store, named Ruth Fallgatter. She saw potential in the odd substance and decided to retail it in her catalogue for $2 apiece. It went on to outsell ever item in the catalogue with the exception of Crayola Crayons. Two years later, Silly Putty was portioned into plastic eggs and sold 250,000 units within 3 days.

HGTV Series Consumed Sends Out Casting Call to the Messes

Consumed is looking for new homes to invade for a second season! The reality series which premiered last fall on HGTV, is designed to help families organize and purge their homes of the unwanted stuff that crowds their lives.

Consumed has been renewed for a second season and is on the hunt for the next messiest family in Greater Vancouver. Ok, well maybe not the messiest, but they are looking for families with a house full of clutter! Are you them?

I had the opportunity to chat with Casting Director Rachel Knudsen about the new reality series premiering on HGTV, and with a little prodding, I was able to dig out some insider info on how to make sure your house is one of the lucky few to be selected.

Thanks for taking the time to chat Rachel. So to start off, what can you tell me about Consumed?
Consumed is a funny, insightful show that helps examine our relationship with our stuff. But not like Hoarders, it is a show about helping people get to the root of the problem with their clutter.

De-Cluttering Host Jill Pollack

And the Host is Jill Pollack? Can you tell me a bit about her?
Ya, Jill is amazing. She is actually a professional organizer from LA, and has worked with a number of celebrities helping them organize and de-clutter. She has also been involved with other reality series' like the Bachelorette. We are really lucky to have her hosting the show.

Nice. And you have already shot some episodes?
Yes. Right now we have shot 13 episodes.

And your still looking for more?
Definitly!

From the families you have worked with, is there anything you can share with us before the show airs?
[laughing] I can tell you that clutter is a very subjective experience. Some people think they have a really cluttered home, and we show up, and it is actually quite clean. Other people think they are pretty good, and the house is really a big mess. We have some families who have papers from a billion years ago, and others that have seriously dysfunctional laundry systems. It is going to be a great season.

Alright, let's get to the info that everyone wants to know. How do you get a leg up on the competition in becoming a guest on the show?
Well... we are looking for people who are: outgoing, sentimental, are thrift-store-aholics, have a lot to say, really need the help, and who can send in really good photos of their mess. And being a bit stressed out about the mess is also good. [laughing].

And if they do get selected, what can they expect from the filming process?
We film for 5 weeks, coming back every few days to film, and help the family with their clutter. Then, after we wrap up, we return 3 months later to do follow-up filming to see how everything is going.

The 1930’s

The 1930’s brought some serious technological advances; radar, scotch tape, Volkswagan beatle, and of course the Viewmaster Slide Viewer. Yup that funky little red viewer that let kids look through two tiny holes at slides illuminated only by sunlight. This was a must have item on every child’s Christmas list.

A number of board games made their debut during this decade, including Sorry, Monopoly, and Scrabble. All of which are being rebranded and resold by the thousands each Christmas - even today.

Granted, modern versions of Monopoly use credit cards, and Scrabble has morphed into Upwords. It is essentially no different than it was a mere 80 years ago.

It is time to pay homage to a very special decade of romantic, comedic, action packed, fantasy-filled, date movies.

Yes, it was the first decade of the year 2000, and boy was it a good one. Below you will find the official Good News Weekly Top 10 list of the greatest date movies of 2000-2010.

In the list we give our review, and not the actual movies summary. We feel it is more important to express our "unbiased" opinion of each. Wouldn't you agree? The Top 10 Greatest Date Movies of the First Decade of the Year 2000

10. The Wedding Planner (2001) - This is one of those feel good date movies that sees lead man Matthew McConaughey play a role he knows all to well. There are not a lot of surprises in this one, but for most women, it is a tissue filled tear jerker. Guys, take some time to appreciate the finer forms of Jennifer Lopez, and buckle in for the long haul. At 103 minutes, it can feel like 2 hours.

9. Casino Royal (2006) - Clearly a man's favourite, Casino Royal is the ultimate struggle of good versus evil. There is nothing better than a bit of action, mixed with a bit of sex to get the engines revved for a date night movie. By the end of the film, the men will be strutting their best Daniel Craig impression, and the ladies will be wondering if they look as unassumingly pretty as Eva Green does. Rent this one if you haven't already.

8. Avatar (2009) - If you don't know why this is on the list... then you must be living under a rock. This is the perfect date movie for pleasing the male desire for action and fantasy, while satisfying the female desire for romance and a happy ending. Avatar is arguably one of the most influential blockbuster films with a true social commentary. Crossing race, religion, and ethical boundaries at every turn, this is definitly a must see film.

7. 50 First Dates (2004) - Just when you thought you had seen the last of the comedy duo Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler, they returned. Barrymore plays a woman who loses her memory every time she goes to bed at night. Adam Sandler playing the man who is hopelessly in love with Barrymore's character. The twist, he must go on a first date with her everyday in order to continue the relationship. You get where we are going with this. The film has a unique premise, and is sure to pull the heartstrings just a little.

6. Hitch (2005) - The date doctor is in! Will Smith takes being "the man" to a completely new level in this hilarious comedy about finding love in all the wrong places. Kevin James plays the absolute best supporting role, allowing this film to transcend the predictably whimsical comedy styling of Will Smith. Check it out if you have a minute and you are sure to have a laugh, without feeling too sappy and emotional by the end.

5. Along Came Polly (2004) - We usually reserve harsh criticism for the film work of Jennifer Anniston, but it seems paring her with the always funny Ben Stiller is just the recipe to bring out the best in this extremely good looking, but apparently untalented 40-something actress. Along Came Polly will keep you laughing throughout the entire film, and Jennifer Anniston could not be looking better!

4. The Notebook (2004) - Yes, the year 2004 was definitely the year of the date movies, and the Notebook is no exception. With this film, we would like to issue a TEAR WARNING, and encourage men who do not like to cry in front of their women to avoid this film. You have to be a soulless individual to get through the Notebook without as much as a tear in your eye, if not a flood of waterworks. We recommend this film for those who really like the Hollywood ending of a heart stopping dramatically romantic film. Warning: Do not watch if you are looking for a pick me up at the end of a long day.

3. 500 Days of Summer (2009) - One of the most understated films of the last decade, 500 Days of Summer is a non-stop rollercoaster of brilliant scripting, and uniquely heartfelt acting. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is absolutely stunning in his portrayal of a heartbroken 20-something trying to bring passion and joy back into his life. The depth of the character he portrays is unlike anything in most of the mainstream media, and this is a must see for anyone looking to watch an awesome romantic comedy.

2. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) - Jim Carry breaks free of his traditional role, and goes ultra-unfunny. And he does so brilliantly! Arguably, his greatest accomplishment, Eternal Sunshine for the Spotless Mind explores what it would be like to erase the painful memories left behind from a horrible breakup. The film pushes the boundaries of what you thought life could be like, and more importantly, what you thought Jim Carry could be like. Watch it 2 or 3 times before you pass judgment on this film. Eternal Sunshine is one of those movies that you can easily shrug off, but if you take a moment and really open your mind, the brilliance of this film will definitely come shining through (no pun intended).

1. Stardust (2007) - The absolute best date movie of the 2000's! Stardust mixes action, adventure, fantasy, comedy, and romance into a masterpiece of a movie. With surprise cameos by some of the world's most famous actors and actresses, you will be truly amazed at how good this film actually is. Kids Up Front: One Ticket Can Change a Life

Donating your extra concert and sports tickets never felt sogood!

Have you ever been to a sports game and wondered why thereare so many open seats in the lower bowl? Me too! Well, it turns out there areliterally thousands of unused season tickets that go to waste each and everydayin cities across Canada. People can’t make it for a variety of reasons: workcommitments, family emergencies, laziness, and the list goes on.

Enter Kids Up Front; a charitable organization hat helpsdistribute all those unused and unwanted tickets to worthy families andchildren who most likely have never even been to an event. The organization,which was founded in Calgary in the spring of 2000, has helped donate over 20million tickets across Canada, and is working toward increasing that number inthe years to come.

“We really feel that our program is nurturing their [thechildren’s] spirit, and building self esteem,” responds Kari Scarlett,Executive Director for the Calgary branch of Kids Up Front. “Everyone rememberstheir first concert or hockey game. We are able to give kids their first.”

So how does it all work? “It’s a simple concept. If youcan’t use a ticket, give it to us, we will give it to a child, and make adifference in their life.” Donors can also help support the cause by sending inmoney for ticket purchases.

Over the years Kids Up Front has helped numerous kidsbuild fond memories and confidence from the events. Kari tells me about a 15-year-oldboy who desperately wanted to go to the Juno awards in 2008. Unfortunately,they couldn’t find a ticket anywhere. Then, on the Thursday before Sunday night event, alady called in to offer a single ticket. The Kids Up Front team quicklyscrambled into action. They rushed over to the group home where theboy lived to present him with the ticket. Immediately, he began screaming atthe top of his lungs, his joy was overwhelming.

On the evening of the event theyoung boy strutted in with a newfound confidence, he made friends with everyonehe was sitting around. The next day, he made cookies and sent a thank you card, mentioning how much he hadbeen through in his life, and how much the tickets meant to him. Since then has gone on to graduate highschool and develop a strong career path. Much of his success he credits to theconfidence he gained on that single night.

“Doodles” (the changing Google logo graphics) on Google’s homepage are famous for indicating an event of anniversary. It is loved and appreciated by millions from around the world. But did you know that the first Google Doodle wasn’t originally to mark a special occasion? It was actually used as an “out of the office” sign.

In 1998 workers took the day off and went to Nevada to see the burning man festival and so, the Google guys decided to design a burning man to add to their Google logo. The burning man was to notify the users that they were out of office and weren’t available to fix any technical issues. The changing graphics were a hit and turned out to be a sort of trademark for Google.

7 Haunted Hotels From Across Canada

Have you ever met Sam the Bellman? Or how about The Lady in Red? Or attended a ballroom party filled with ghosts?

If so, you’re not alone! Here are 7 hotels in Canada that have legendary haunted tales that are sure to make you quiver.

1. The “Lady in Red” at The Fairmont Hotel (Vancouver)

We start close to home, with the Fairmont Hotel in Downtown Vancouver. Since 1939, the chateau establishment has been home for visitors from all over the world. During the 1930’s and 1940’s, a lady by the name of Jennie Pearl Cox was a ballroom regular at the Fairmont, prior to her death in a car crash outside the hotel in 1944.

Since then, legend has it that the spirit of Cox, also known as “The Lady in Red”, can be seen roaming the halls of the 14th floor (or is it really the 13th?). To make matters even spookier, the hotel’s elevator is known to make stops on the 14th floor, without even being requested!

2. Sam the Bellman and The Blushing Bride at The Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel (Banff)

This Canadian landmark, which has been around since 1888, is home to two spooky residents.

The first is “Sam the Bellman”, a former employee of the hotel who retired in 1967. Sam promised to return to the hotel, but died a few years after his retirement. Legend has it, that Sam did indeed return to the hotel and can be seen today in his 1960’s classic hotel uniform. Sam is especially fond of late night arrivals and guests who lose their keys. So if you’re checking into this hotel, arrive in the afternoon and hold on tight to your room key!

The second guest is a blushing bride from the 1920’s. As she was descending down the grand stairwell of the hotel, her veil caught on fire from the candles that lined the staircase. As she began to panic, the bride fell down the long stairwell to her unfortunate death. Since then, guests have complained about odd noises coming from the bridal suite and she can often be seen a top of the stairwell in her wedding dress, before quickly vanishing away.

3. Emily Carr at The James Bay Inn (Victoria)

Famous Group of Seven painter, Emily Carr, is one of Canada’s most famous and recognized artists. On March 2, 1945, Carr died at the James Bay Inn in Victoria, British Columbia. Since that day, the hotel bar is said to be haunted by anyone who criticizes Carr’s artwork.

4. The Unwanted Guest in Room 202 at Fort Garry Hotel (Winnipeg)

If you’re looking to have your honeymoon in Winnipeg (and why wouldn’t you!), be sure to stay away from room 202 at the Fort Garry Hotel! According to the legend, there is a cloaked figure that stands at the foot of the bed in room 202. Also, hotel workers often complain about weird noises and disturbances throughout the second floor. Perhaps the 13th floor isn’t always the spookiest floor in the hotel!

5. Ghost Party at the Royal York Hotel (Toronto)

Looking for a good party while you’re in Toronto? The Penthouse suite at the Royal York Hotel is said to hold a Grand Crystal Ballroom, which often hosts loud and outrageous parties. The only catch: None of the party guests are actually alive.

The Ballroom has been permanently shutdown after failing to meet fire code regulations, however there are times when the service elevator still goes all the way up to this floor, even though it has been closed off. Guests who stay on the floor below the Penthouse often complain about noise, music, and talking coming from the above floor. Chandeliers are also known to shake, adding to the legend that the hotel guests are not alone.

6. Knock Knock at the Hotel Rialto (Victoria)

It’s generally rude practice to knock on someone’s door and then quickly run away. However, that’s exactly what happens at the Hotel Rialto. The hotel was built in 1911, and has become a staple in the downtown Victoria area.

Behind the front desk, lies the only door that leads in and out of the basement of the hotel. On occasion, employees will hear a knock coming from inside. However, upon opening the door, they find that there is nobody there on the other side. To tie this haunted spook story into a nice little bow, the basement of the Hotel was once a morgue. Creepy enough for you?

7. Passengers from the Titanic at the Chateau Laurier (Ottawa)

In 1912, the Chateau Laurier became the first ever Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) hotel, and was commissioned by Charles Melville Hays. Prior to the opening of the hotel, Hays and some of his men travelled to Europe to pick out the furniture that would be used in the hotel.

On the way back, they hopped aboard the Titanic, and the rest is history. Since then, Hays is said to be seen throughout the hotel, as he has made the Chateau Laurier his new home. Guests and employees often time complain about rattling walls and moving objects, which legend believes are due to the ghosts of Hays’ men, who also died on the Titanic.

Quirky Review: Turning everyday people into famous inventors

Quirky.com is a new and innovative social product development company that plans to change how the world creates products and brings them to market. The website aims to solve one problem: how do you get a product that consumers want and need, to the market quickly and effectively? The solution: ask the consumer to manager the entire process.

The premise is simple, Quirky gives new and would-be inventors the opportunity to post their product ideas and get community votes and feedback. If the idea is selected, it is then posted back to the community for designing, naming, and tag-lining. Once this process is complete, it is off to the martket for sale. First online, requiring a certain number to be sold, and then to the shelves of Bed Bath and Beyond for even more exposure and subsequent sales.

I have used the Quirky service for the past 5 weeks, and besides being a real cool site to browse, it is quite simply addictive. Having the opportunity to help name a product, or design how it will look is amazingly empowering. Granted, none of my ideas have yet to be accepted, I remain hopeful that one day it will happen and I will see my idea on a real product.

So how do you make money? There are a number of ways that Quirky allows you to make money for your contributions. Submit, vote, and contribute. Each one will give you what Quirky calls influence, and the more influence you have the more money you make off of each product. The % share varies, but for those who have an idea selected they can make between 5-8 cents per dollar of total product revenue. Fairly standard for any licensing agreement. Some inventors on the site have already made upwards of $35,000.

So is this a legitimate site, or just another internet scam? Let's look at the pros and cons.

Pros:

You make real money for creating and helping influence products
Free to sign up and vote
It is a lot of fun to vote
You get the opportunity to submit an idea, and make lots of money if it hits store shelves
You get feedback on your ideas from the community forum
You can connect with other like-minded entrepreneurs of all ages

Cons:

It costs $10 every time you submit an idea
Without having an idea go to market, your influence probably wont make a whole lot of money
It can be very addictive, which stops you from doing other things
Quirky products that get selected need to retail under $150

Summary:
Overall, it costs very little to submit an idea, and the payoff if the idea is selected will make you a whole lot of cash. In my opinion, there is no downside to signing up and trying out the service. Just have fun with it and enjoy seeing all those great ideas floating around.

Single Women and the Smell of Attraction

Forget that Ferrari, and high paying executive job, women are actually attracted to smell.

According to a recent survey of women’s dating preferences, how a man smells is the #1 factor guiding her level of attraction. But buyer beware, it isn’t expensive colognes that are making her hot.

According to the women in the survey it is the scent of coffee, baked goods, and even freshly cut grass that drive them wild with desire. Lucky for me I am sitting in a coffee shop, sipping on wheat grass, while snacking on a freshly baked muffin.

According to dating and relationship expert Ian Karner, women want a man that reminds them of fond childhood memories. "You grow up surrounded by various scents and smells, and they make you feel comfortable or they bring up positive associations."

There is one scent that men should avoid, according to Karner. “Women do not like men who smell like their dads.” Although, if the popular sitcom Two and a Half Men has taught us anything, this could be a false assumption.

The Chicken Came First!

Scientists from Sheffield University have finally solved the age old mystery of which came first, the chicken or the egg.

Researchers used a hi-tech computer, called HECToR, to analyze the molecular structure of an eggshell. During the analysis, they found that a protein called ovecleidin (OC-17), which can only be found a chicken’s overies, is necessary for the formation of the eggshell. Therefore, without the chicken, there can be no egg.

“It had long been suspected that the egg came first but now we have the scientific proof that shows that in fact the chicken came first”, said Colin Freeman from Sheffield University.

It was not clear whether Chicken Little was an active participant in the study, and when Good News Weekly contacted Mr. Little for an interview, he refused to comment, claiming that the last time he spoke, he was taken completely out of context and everyone went into a panic.

Chocolate Revs Engines, Literally!

The world's first environmentally-friendly racing car was launched early this month. Made from sustainable and renewable materials, it is the first Formula 3 racing car of it’s kind. Designers hope that this new green technology will someday be adopted by Formula 1 teams such as McLaren and Ferrari.

Made entirely of vegetables, the 145mph ecoF3 has a steering wheel made of carrots, a body made of potatoes, and a seat made of soybeans. The engines lubricants are plant-oil based and it uses a biodiesel engine that is capable of running on chocolate and vegetable oil. The car parts are made from vegetable fibers mixed with resins, and the oils in the chocolate are refined to produce fuel.

Although green to the bone, this eco-friendly car was not allowed race in the Formula 3. The WorldFirst team, from Warwick University, hope racing chiefs will change the rules so they can compete in races next season. The engine fails to meet current regulations because of its unusual fuel. A team spokesman said: "We hope the Formula 1 teams will see that an environmentally friendly car is not necessarily a slow car.

"We expect our new materials to be used by the Formula 1 cars of the future."

Have you ever wondered what a shirt made from bamboo would feel like? Well... yeah, me niether. That is until I met up with a local Vancouver designer who is bringing it to the main stream.

Meet Justin Towell, CEO/Owner of Kaboom! clothing company based out of downtown Vancouver. I had a chance to sit down with the passionate designer and get all the details on his new business venture. Check it out!

Hey Justin, thanks for meeting with me. First of, tell ss a little bit about the clothing line.
[Justin] My clothing line is built on the foundation of responsible living and having the ability of being continued with minimal long-term effects on the environment. Featuring amazing bamboo and organic cotton apparel for men and women that will help create awareness of sustainable living. I will also be donating $1 from every purchase to one of our three (3) featured foundations; The David Suzuki Foundation, The Canadian Red Cross, and The World Wildlife Foundation of Canada. I am proud to sponsor global humanitarian, environmental and planetary projects!

Awesome. So, what was the inspiration behind the clothing line?
[Justin] The inspiration came from my discovery and research on bamboo plants. Bamboo has astounding renewable properties, and is one of the most versatile plants on the planet. There are well over 3,000 species of bamboo on the planet. Some of which can grow up to 3ft a day and up to 80ft over 5 years. The faster they grow, the bigger they get. This woody plant which is a essentially a grass, is a great alternative to wood products because it can grow so quickly without having to be re-planted. Not only can it grow fast, but it also exchanges the carbon dioxide in our environment 30% more efficient than a tree of the same space. Imagine if we all grew bamboo in our back yards! My ability to connect with people through my brand and through an amazing product will also allow me to support my community in the relevant challenges we face day-to-day.

What is your background and what made you decide to get into this business?
[Justin] I grew up in a "great big" little hockey town of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. I grew up in an environment that offered hot sunny summer days on the Great Lakes, and an environment that offered a magical winter wonderland. It is a place where every child had a skating rink in their backyard. My appreciation for the outdoors and having grown up among amazing people has essentially steered me into the direction of this business. After working 10 years in sales and marketing, I began to realize that I sincerely enjoy educating, entertaining and helping people. I was the 4-year-old boy who sat next to every person on bus, always asking questions, always ready to spark conversations (which I still do that to this day). I got into this business so that I can continue to grow and connect with everyone around me. Through the power of branding, I hope to educate, inspire, and entertain every person I meet. I am offering solutions, alternatives, and opportunity for people to connect with and enjoy a healthier lifestyle, proving that being responsible and accountable for our actions and thoughts can be a fun and a rewarding experience. Sustainability seems to be a big part of the driving force behind the clothing line. Can you tell us about why sustainability is so important to you?
[Justin] I feel that as the world's population grows, we're going to need responsible companies out there that are focusing more and more on sustainability. The reality of our time, our generation, is that as we move forward to become the next corporate leaders, we have a chance to change some of the harmful policies of our predecessors. We have far more options available to us today, to launch and maintain sustainable product lines that are high quality and ethically motivated. I think people gravitate towards that. I think the social consciousness is shifting toward people being responsible consumers. Most people, given an item that costs the same, will choose the one that is manufactured responsibly. It's decisions like this by people who are educated, socially and environmentally aware, that are helping to shift the tide everywhere from the local farmer's markets to the huge corporate offices. We as consumers drive the demand for products and when we find a brand that respects our choices, we support that brand. I want to offer people the chance to get their hands on great products, but also feel connected to our brand, one that was built from the ground up to respect our customers' desire for high-quality, sustainably produced, ridiculously comfortable clothing. We are building "kaboom" because it is a brand that we want to wear, because we didn't find anyone else out there doing it for us. It is one that we'd be proud of supporting. In turn, we're helping individuals like you and I transition into the new revolution of sustainable living. However, being a socially conscious and responsible brand doesn't mean you have to get rid of all the fun! Are you planning to expand the line?
[Justin] We have been receiving an overwhelming positive interest and response to my mission, vision, and product so far. Everybody is very optimistic and excited to see the business evolve into something great. Once the last of my introductory limited edition bamboo tee are all gone, then we will be able to expand further into the men’s and women’s bamboo workout apparel and casual clothing. What have been some of the most challenging aspects of launching a new clothing line?
[Justin] Some of the most challenging aspects of launching a new clothing line, particularly with an online store, is the constant research in this new market and the constant adjustments in finding the best solutions for getting the this amazing product to our customers. Living Longer, is it Worth it?

Maybe... it all depends on what is involved right? Well the answer is simple, if you want to live a long and healthy life, you have to get Married! Yup, marriage - the one word that can send a man running for dear life, may actually be the exact thing that will increase his longevity.

According to a recently released Pew Research Center analysis of demographic and economic data over the last four decades, married men live longer. In 1970, most men had the pressure of being the sole financial provider for their household, but now 22% of women make more than their husbands, and 50% of women make similar or equal income. An extra breadwinner in the house helps married men feel more financially secure and less stressed.

In addition, married men tend to engage in less risky behaviors such as drinking and driving, and jumping off cliffs. They begin to exercise more and eat healthier; something that single men seem to lose control of.

Women seem to instinctively know how to nurture, and most men, as tough as they are, just want to be taken care of! It shows in the statistics. Happily married men live longer, healthier lives!

So guys, what are you waiting for?? Go out there and get hitched! Your life depends on it!

GPS Underwear

Brazilian designer Lucia Lorio has introduced a new line of sexy lingerie that comes with a high tech twist. Hidden amongst the padding and lace of each pair of bra and panties is a small GPS tracking system, capable of locating the undergarment within a meter of it’s actual position. Yup, you heard right, GPS built right in to the underwear!

The GPS underwear can be tracked via a home computer or cell phone, and has left many men eager to buy a pair in order to keep tabs on their wives. Unfortunately for them, the GPS has an on/off switch and is password protected, making unsolicited monitoring impossible. Even so, how many women would like to be tracked?

It seems to me that having GPS built into socks would be more useful, given that one always seems to go missing. But I guess tracking your underwear can be a good thing too. You might be concerned about its whereabouts after a hazy Friday night on Granville Street!

The price tag for a pair of these modern day knickers starts as low as $500 and goes as high as $1200 for more sophisticated models. An intriguing idea. However, for all the guys out there, I think you might score way more points if you buy your gal diamonds instead!

BC Place Roof Progress

GNW BC Place Commentary: The roof is scheduled for completion by September 30th! And I must admit, it is looking pretty good. The staff at Good News Weekly took the long awaited opportunity on July 31st to check out the inside of the BC Place Roof project. There wasn't much to see, other than the shell of what is to come, but with a squinted eye you can imagine just how grand it will look when all is said and done.

It still remains to be seen as to whether the new BC Place roof will be a pinnicle, or ultimate eye-sore of beautiful Vancouver skyline. But having already bought my Grey Cup tickets well in advnace, I am looking forward to experiencing the full adventure of the new roof!

A few facts about BC Place
The 60,000-seat stadium located on the eastern edge of downtown Vancouver was built by the province in 1983.

The need to replace the white, puffy marshmallow roof that has dominated the city's skyline became apparent in January 2007, when the Teflon-coated covering tore open and collapsed, leaving the fabric flapping in the wind.

PavCo signed a fixed-priced contract for the new retractable roof with PCL Constructors Canada Inc., provincial Tourism and Culture Minister Kevin Krueger said Friday morning.

The roof will be paid for with a 40-year $458 million loan to PavCo from the province, as part of its capital plan funding, but Krueger did not provide further details on the funding arrangement.

"A new retractable roof will allow PavCo to attract a broader range of sporting and entertainment events and continue to host the province's largest consumer shows and cultural events that benefit Vancouver and our entire province," Krueger said.

"It will also allow us to provide a revitalized home to the BC Lions and allow for the establishment of the first season of the Vancouver Whitecaps as a Major League Soccer franchise in 2011."

So here is some Good News for you. The Village at False Creek has just released their lineup for the Summer Screen outdoor movie event! I love movies, and watching them outdoors is even better! The lineup has some awesome films, from the old and the new. This is one event you don't want to miss.

The films will show every Thursday in August starting at sunset.Vancouver. Imagine a European café-on-the-plaza al fresco experience. Now live it this summer on a warm summer evening at the Village on False Creek.

The Lineup

August 4 – Inception ( 2010) : Directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Ellen Page. In a world where technology exists to enter the human mind through dream invasion, a highly skilled thief is given a final chance at redemption. (PG-13)

Summer Screen food vendors will offer popcorn, pulled pork sandwiches and beverages. Admission is free for the general public area (non-seated area) where guests can bring a picnic, blankets or cushions. Visitors aged 19 and over (strictly enforced) can also reserve a bistro table on the plaza for up to four (4) people at a cost of $20 per table.

Life-Saving Briefs

If you want to get your heart rate, blood pressure, or hormone levels checked, you would have to make a visit to your doctor’s office or local hospital, right? WRONG! At least if you are male anyway. A team of US scientists in San Diego have designed some revolutionary men’s briefs that are comfortable, durable, and stylish, but differ in one small way from regular underpants, they may be able to save lives!

The garments have printed on the waistband, an electronic biosensor that is in constant contact with the skin, and measures vital signs.

The project funded by the US military and spearheaded by Professor Joseph Wang at the University of California makes a breakthrough in the field of ‘intelligent textiles’ and denotes a shift to more home-based management of health care.

Ideally the underwear will be used for a variety of purposes.

For military, the sensors will eventually be able to locate and identify the soldier’s type of injury and direct the release of medication to treat the wound.

For the elderly, the underwear garment might offer remote health monitoring of cardiac, stroke, and diabetic markers. Imagine what that would do to free up hospitable space!

Athletes may use the biosensors to provide information on stress hormones, sugar levels, and even alcohol blood content! This may mean a whole new revamp of what drug testing might entail at the Olympics!

Wang asserts there is still more work to be done to ensure the sensors are robust and durable enough to cope with the daily wearers activity.

As for articles made for women, there was no mention. I, on the other hand can’t help but wonder, in world where everyone wears biosensor undergarments, will the term ‘sexy underwear’ ever exist again?

Fifty-Four Forty or Fight!

The Canadian Alternative Rock Group 54-40 takes their name from the slogan "fifty-four forty or fight!" In the first half of the nineteenth century, when Britain represented Canada, a land dispute with America emerged. Both Britain and America felt rights for expansion into an area of land known as Oregon Country. America felt it had valid claim to the entire Oregon Country which sat at parallel 54 40.

Tensions grew between the British and The US, and the slogan "fifty-four forty or fight!" almost made rise to a third war in 70 years between Britain and the US. Luckily, deteriorating relations with Mexico forced US president James K Polk to back down in compromise at the last minute. The border between Canada and America was moved back to the 49th Parallel (and remains so to this day) thus leaving parallel 54-40 Canada's own. The band 54-40 encompasses this victory and Canadian pride.

The World’s First Refrigerated Beach

With summer kicking into high gear here in Canada, thousands will be flocking to the beach for a dose of much needed vitamin D. If this weekend was any indication, it appears we are in for a wonderfully hot summer.

However, nothing can compare to the July sun of Dubai. With summer temperatures reaching an average of 40-50C it can be one of the most unbearable places to live - without some sort of relief.

Versace claims to have the solution by bringing refrigerated living to the beaches of their Dubai Hotel. A cooling system is being installed that will actually suck the heat out of the sand and leave it cool and comfortable for hotel guests to walk on. Engineers are laying a network of pipes below the sand next to the Palazzo Versace Hotel, filled with a coolant that will absorb and remove the heat.

It is also rumored that giant blowers will be installed along the beach to waft gentle cool air over the hotel guests. Yes it is true, for a mere million dollars in net income, and a little bit of insanity you too can enjoy a chilled out experience in the hottest place on earth. I’ve already started saving, how about you?

Transformers Have Arrived!

Were you captivated by the Transformers movies, left dreaming of what it would be like to have a life-size transformer of your own? The reality is, you may have your own transformer sooner than you think.

The Terrafugia, a small airplane that can drive on roads has been billed as the first ‘flying car!’, and is now one step closer to becoming street and sky legal, clearing a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulatory weight hurdle for classification into the ‘light sport aircraft category.

The Terrafugia has come in 50kgs over-weight in accommodating roadworthy safety items for this category, but the FAA have ruled that as long as consumers are advised of this weight difference, the car-plane hybrid vehicle can be sold.

Completing it’s maiden voyage last March in New York, in true transformer style, the car can switch from a roadable vehicle to a winged aircraft in just thirty-seconds, reaching speeds of 105 km/h and 185 km/h. The Terrafugia can cover 644 km before needing a refill of unleaded fuel. Pretty good efficiency for a transformer!

Membership into the category means that individuals eager to fly the Terrafugia will need only 20 hours of flying time training. And the price for these cars is expected at around $200,000 with deliveries beginning as soon as next year, pending more safety test approvals!

I can’t afford $200,000 but I’m going to start saving! Can you imagine what it would be like to never have to wait at another red light, or get stuck in another traffic jam ever again?

The Whistling Language

Personally, I find it almost impossible to whistle properly, which would leave me a bit speechless in this language.

A number of languages have been recorded that rely more heavily on whistling, than actual talk. One such language is Silbo Gomero, used on La Gomera in the Canary Islands.

Silbo Gomero has it’s roots in Spanish, but for the speakers, most of the words and phrases are whistled. Unfortunately, "El Silbo" began dying out in the late 20th century, however, its study has since been mandated throughout all the schools on the island in order to preserve the unique characteristics of the language.

The Hemp Solution

Most commonly associated with marijuana? Maybe not...

For thousands of years, until 1883, hemp was the world’s largest agricultural crop, from which the majority of fiber, fabric, soap, lighting oil, paper, and medicines were produced.

An acre of hemp produces more paper than an acre of trees, and the paper actually comes out more durable. In actual fact, the US Declaration of Independence was written on hemp paper.

In 1941 Ford produced a car that could run on hemp fuel.

US Military Creates Supercomputer from PS3

PlayStation 3, one of my favorite gaming consoles, is now being revamped into something pretty serious. The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) has connected 1,760 PlayStation 3 systems together to create what the organization is calling the “fastest interactive computer in the entire Defense Department”.

The Condor Cluster, as the group of systems is known, also includes 168 separate graphical processing units and 84 coordinating servers capable of performing 500 trillion floating point operations per second (FLOPS). Did I lose you in all that computer gibberish?! Simply put, FLOPS is a measure of computer processing system speed and to give you an idea, the PS3 supercomputer is around 100,000 times faster than the average desktop computer.

There are some very surprising advantages that come with using PS3s for the supercomputer's core. AFRL was able to construct the system for a total cost of $2 million. The equivalent system built entirely with off-the-shelf computer parts would cost $20-40 million. The supercomputer will also consume one-tenth the power of other comparably powered supercomputers.

The computer, which is housed in Rome, New York will be used for research by Air Force Service branches including quick processing of ultra-high-resolution satellite imagery, as well as research into artificial intelligence, radar enhancement and pattern recognition.

This got us to thinking, if the Military can create a supercomputer out of 1,760 PS3’s, what could we create with 1 Nintendo, 1 Super Nintendo, a PlayStation 2, an Xbox, and a broken Dreamcast? Challenge accepted!

An interesting note: In 2000, Saddam Hussein, claimed to be developing a number of PS2 systems into a defense supercomputer, and the UK Intelligence dismissed the claim as nonsense.

The Beer Fetching, Laundry Folding Robot

Turning dreams into reality is what this high tech bot is all about!

After successfully teaching their PR2 robot to play pool and win, the guys over at Willow Garage have now successfully taught PR2 to fold socks, and even fetch a beer!

Folding socks may seem simple, but for a robot, this is a very complex task. The PR2 must first determine if the socks are inside out and flip them around if needed, then decide if the socks are oriented in the same direction, and finally locate the exact points in which the socks should be picked up to ensure the perfect fold.

At the moment it takes PR2 almost 15 minutes to fold one pair of socks, however, this handy little robot has another trick up it’s sleeves that will help make the wait more bearable - it fetches beer!

With a simple voice command instructing the robot which beer to retrieve, the PR2 heads to the fridge, picks out the beer, and then delivers it to you using face recognition software.

The PR2 robot goes on sale next month for a handsome $400,000 per unit, and is touted to become the new “man’s best friend”.

Have you heard of the soon-to-be famous Purse n' Boots? Admittedly, neither had we; that is until Jamil Karim got the chance to sit down for a one-on-one interview with designer Elizabeth Anne LeGear.

Elizabeth Anne LeGear (www.elizabethanneshoes.com) recently released "Purse n' Boots" - the world's first purse for your feet. She has patented and introduced the world's first designer leather boots with interior pockets (to hold everything from iphones & change to keys and credit cards).

The boots were publicly launched at the Fashion Has No Borders/Fashion Television Expose hosted on March 26 in Calgary, and are already available for order across Canada and the United States.

What was your “a-ha” moment when you decided to design these shoes? Was it something that happened or something that you saw that gave you the inspiration for this design?

I had been trying to think of something I wanted to do as a business where I wasn’t working your typical 9-5. So I thought the best way to do it was to come up with a really great business, but I don’t know what it is yet. So I put it on the shelf and I let my subconscious do its work.

Then one day I was at the bar and I was pulling my cell phone out of my boot, because I’ve always kept stuff in there, and I thought to myself “you know, it would be really nice if [my boot] had a pocket so I wouldn’t have to reach all the way down to the bottom to grab it”. And then I thought about it and I realized that I hadn’t really seen anything like that before. So that was kind of my “a-ha” moment and then it was just a matter of doing all the google searches and patent searches and hoping I didn’t find it anywhere, which I never did.

Why do you think these boots haven’t been created before? The idea seems so perfect and almost overdue

I’m not too sure.. I actually came across few people who told me “Oh Yeah I thought about that like 3 years ago” but they never really acted on it. That’s kind of what I’m finding is that people had thought of this idea but nobody really did anything about it. The closest thing I had found was this running shoe that had a small pocked for a house key, but that’s the only thing that we found that was close.

My favourite part about these shoes is that they seem so addicting. Once you wear them and you realize how convenient they are, it’ll almost be impossible not to go out with them again. Would you agree?

I would definitely agree! Now I keep thinking of what else we can do with [the patent]. A pocket for a passport would be nice so we are thinking about doing that. We have a million and a half ideas with this idea. I wear my boots all the time. It’s actually the only thing I wear now because I never have to worry about where my phone is because I have such a horrible habit of losing things so now I know that all my things are with me 100% of the time.

Have any retail stores shown interest in these boots?

Yeah we’ve talked to a few, but they’re primarily Western Cowboy Boots type stores. In terms of fashion stores, that’s’ my fault as I haven’t really hit the streets just yet. My goal was to create a following and interest for these shoes, which I have now, before I hit the streets. So step 1 is complete, and step 2 is now going door to door and seeing who wants them.

Given that we are a local publication, our readers would love to hear a little bit about your time here in B.C. How long were you here for before you moved to Calgary? And does being born here on the West Coast impact or influence your design style at all?

Oh definitely. I’ve spent a lot of time on the West Coast. I technically live in Calgary, but I’m from B.C.. All my family and friends all live out there. Vancouver has such a vibrant pulse to it when it comes to fashion. When I was coming up with the first design, I would walk around places like Gastown and Yaletown and kind of scope out the stores and see what the current trends were and kind of get some ideas from them. So [Vancouver] has definitely had some influence on my current designs.

I lived in B.C. for pretty much my entire life up until I moved to Calgary when I was 21 and I’ve been out here for the last 5-6 years. But I’ll probably be moving back to Vancouver in the fall because I miss it a lot!

The NHL playoffs are starting soon, we have to ask where your hockey allegiance lies: Canucks or Flames?

[Laughter]. It’s definitely with the Canucks! Just because you’ve changed cities doesn’t mean you should jump ship and change teams. Don’t worry, I’m still loyal and my allegiances are in the right place!

Thank god! Had you said the Flames we may have had to stop this interview.

I saw on your Facebook page that you’re a fan of the movie Usual Suspects. Be honest, did you know the entire time that Kevin Spacey was Kaiser Soze?

No! I had no idea. I’m one of those people who can be easily dooped, so with that movie it was right over my head until the very end. That’s why I loved it! When his foot and his walk go back to normal I was like “ahhh it was you!”

Last Question. One of my favourite parts of interviewing any talent is getting a chance to tap into their brain and see what else they’re thinking of. So I gotta ask, what should we expect next from Elizabeth Ann?

Expect more varieties of this concept. Now that I’m on a roll I can’t stop thinking of new situations that this could be great in. The one I’m thinking about a lot now is travelling and making a pocket for a passport. I want to create a really comfortable walking shoe that you can walk all over Europe with won’t hurt your feet. Your passport would be with you the entire time and that would be the most important part. I mean, a fanny pack looks good on nobody so this is a good way to hide it on you and nobody will know that your passport is on you.

I also want to create a design for when I go riding. I always lose my phone when I go riding so this way I’ll know its safe. So I just keep trying to think of new ways sand inventive concepts to make sure this idea doesn’t fall by the wayside.

A lot more variety in our catalogue is what to expect this year!

Vancouver Fashion Week Opening Gala Review

The cameras, the catwalk, and most importantly the fashion were out on full display on Tuesday night as Vancouver Fashion Week kicked off in style with an opening gala at the Sutton Hotel in Downtown Vancouver.

Coming off the heels of a very successful Fashion Week in October, VFW is back and looking to pick up right where they left off. This year’s show features both established and emerging designers from across the globe and will feature the hottest Fall/Winter designs.

Among the ordered chaos of the makeshift runway, we watched in awe as both local and international designers displayed some of their amazing work. We especially enjoyed the kimono-clad women that were out supporting relief efforts in Japan.

All the shows can be seen at the Empire Landmark Hotel starting on Wednesday and going all the way until Sunday night. VFW is a must see for any fashion fiend, and tickets are still available on their website at www.vanfashionweek.com

The Pope declined.

At a meeting of the Cardinals, The Pope announces his decision in the good news/bad news format. The good news is... that we have 100 million dollars for charities.

The Case of the Disappearing Toes

Claire was just 7 years old when she developed what appeared to be an infected toenail. Upon closer inspection through an x-ray – her toes were actually shrinking because her bones were literally dissolving! No one has been able to determine the cause of Claire’s rare disease, as she is the only known case in the world with these rare symptoms.

Claire is one of the lucky ones – an effective treatment was found through a coordinated burst of research at three universities, under the direction of a Medical Geneticist and co-founder of the Rare Disease Foundation. A high blood pressure medication was innovatively repurposed to stop the condition from progressing and allow Claire’s regenerative bone cells to work unhindered in her body. Today, Claire, with all of her toes, continues her pursuit of athletic excellence!

Claire is just one success story from this newly founded organization. Rare diseases together affect 1 in 12 Canadians and our children carry much of this burden. The Polish Church Creates a Road Rage Prayer

I don’t know about you, but when someone cuts me off and I feel the heat of road rage taking over my body, the first thing I think of is a good ol prayer! Ok, maybe not so much, but the Polish Church is hoping that their prayers will reach us anyway.

On Sunday April 3, the Polish Catholic Church will be holding a day of prayer designed to reduce the nation’s mounting incidence of road rage. According to the OECD-affiliated International Transport Forum there are 12 deaths on Polish roads for every 100,000 inhabitants, whereas in a country like the UK, incidences are only about 3.9.

Shocking, I know!

The Polish Catholic Church figures that their prayer day will be the perfect remedy. In addition, they will be holding a two-day retreat for drivers to spend time thinking about how they react when they get behind the wheel.

"Many of us behave like pagans when we're driving," said Father Marian Midura, the organizer of the prayer day, which has the support of the national police. "Even though we hang rosaries, carry images of saints and have the early Christian sign of the fish on our cars we do not respect other drivers."

It is not clear whether the church plans on encouraging driver’s to use the prayer day as a one-off cure to road rage, or whether there will be follow-up CD’s and radio programs used to calm the nervous driver. However, one thing remains certain; come Monday there isn’t a prayer in the world that will rid the world of the dreaded morning commute through rush hour traffic. Trust me, I've tried!

Should We Call it Mossiping?

Men are bigger gossipers than women!

According to a recent research study of cellphone users (performed by the Social Issues Research Centre), 33% of men admit to gossiping everyday, compared to 26% percent of women. Is this an example of gross underreporting by women, or a true scientific fact? We will let you be the judge!

Regardless, we all gossip at some point in our lives and boy do I have some juicy facts about gossip for you!

Only 5% of gossip time is devoted to criticism, and another 5% used to ask for or give advice. The other 90% of gossip is used to chat about who is doing what with whom

Men find it easier to gossip with women than with other men

Women use more animated tones, more detail, and tend to get more excited! However, don't let that fool you men, the phrase, "Did you hear Dallas crashed his truck last night?" is still gossip!

Men also spend more time gossiping about themselves and their own affairs - which is no real surprise, what man doesn't love to talk about himself?

Psychologist Robin Dunbar proposes gossiping is similar to 'animal grooming' like picking the twigs from each other's fur. Gossip helps us bond and feel close.

Whereas Geoffrey Miller states that we use gossip to compete for friends and sexual partners. When we gossip, we reveal behaviors that others find acceptable, and therefore allows us to choose suitable comrades.

Regardless, a good gossip between humans, referred to as a 'vocal grooming', has been shown to relax humans and lower blood pressure. Just like how animals look after each other in the animal kingdom, gossiping helps us to feel like we are all on the same team!

Big Book Drive Collects Over 10,000 Books

The team at Good News Weekly are proud to present the results of this amazing book drive put together by 3 very compassionate and ambitious young SFU Students. Congrats on all your great work!

The BIG Book Drive team made up of three Simon Fraser University students, Joseph Choi, Alex Venetis and Steffi Chua would like to thank the residents of BC for their incredible support and generosity on February 26th and March 19-20, 2011 in Richmond and Burnaby, respectively. Altogether, these communities donated more than 10,000 books to The BIG Book Drive, all of which is benefiting the Salvation Army's Family Services to provide low-income families and children with an opportunity to gain a better literacy education. In addition, the team was able to recycle more than 24 large boxes of magazines and catalogues, all of which was recycled into new resources.

"This project was started in the beginning of January just 10 weeks ago. Our initial estimation for this entire book drive was going to be 2,000 books, but we never could've imagined that we would end up with over 10,000," says Joseph Choi, one of The BIG Book Drive coordinators. "The generosity from the Lower Mainland community is simply incredible."

These books are going towards the Salvation Army in support of their Family Services and their other literacy-related programs. According to Literacy BC, 40% of adults in British Columbia do not have the literacy skills needed to fully participate and succeed in today’s world. This presents over one million people who are under-equipped to cope with society's increasing informational demands. Having low literacy rates increases poverty and crime which hinders economic productivity; it indirectly affects our personal health and well-being overall. The BIG Book Drive team wants to give these low-income families and children access to these books so that they could gain the literacy skills to succeed.

"We are really thankful for all the help the Salvation Army has given us since the beginning," says Choi. "We feel very honoured to have received such incredible support from them, and by helping us carry out what we wanted to do by supplying us with their own resources."

The BIG Book Drive team would've never been able to achieve this feat if it were not for the help and support from their sponsors, including The Salvation Army, Richmond Scouts, Lansdowne Centre, Black Bond Books, Kin's Farm Market, Literacy BC, Cornerstone Printing, SFU Bookstore and TrendzPrintMedia, as well as the help of volunteers from the Richmond Scouts and The Salvation Army. The team would like to thank these organizations for their contributions in making this event a success.

"It is the Lower Mainland community who should be proud of what they have come together to achieve," says Steffi Chua. "There are so many children, teenagers, and young adults who don't have access to books that can improve their literacy skills. It's fortunate to see that as soon as we sent the word of an opportunity to help these individuals, these book donors jumped right on board."

"We are privileged to be able to attend a university like SFU," added Alex Venetis. "If it were not for our education, we never would have been able to make this happen. There's so many people out there who can benefit from these books; all it takes is a community with the desire to make that happen. Together, we can make a difference in someone's life."

UBC Students Compete for 3D Conservation Expedition

Yesterday afternoon I had the pleasure of speaking with Olivia and Kirsten, two Conservation students in the Faculty of Forestry at UBC, who are participating in a worldwide video competition. The premise: get the most amount of votes, and become part of a 10 person team headed out on the ultimate conservation expedition to Borneo, Indonesia, to film a 3D action movie and documentary series about deforestation and orangutans.

Crazy! I Know! But these girls are dedicated to their cause, and you gotta love them for it.

This project will restore a full rainforest ecosystem, provide a sustainable livelihood for the local community, create global awareness of deforestation, and create a safe and permanent home for thousands of endangered Orangutans. The project will be produced by award winning Australian Virgo Productions in collaboration with National Geographic Entertainment, and will be shot by acclaimed cinematographer Don McAlpine (Moulin Rouge, Rome + Juliet, Wolverine).

Ok, so now you really have my interest. I love those movies!

So I had to ask, besides the obvious film creds, why they wanted to be part of the project. The answer was simple: “It is a very important cause, doing important work, and this is what we are passionate about.”

I checked out the videos, and between Kirsten’s appropriate lumberjack wardrobe, and Olivia’s quirky 3D glasses accessory, I truly believe these girls have an excellent shot at winning the competition.
