When it rains noone can get around without an umbrella; but have you ever wondered who this useful tool was created by?

The prefix umbra is latin for "shade" hence, the name "umbrella", and has actually proved to be one of the most oldest artifacts in history! Ancient art and artifacts from Egypt, Assyria, Greece and China show that the basic umbrella was created more than four thousand years ago. Although we cannot quite determine whether it was used for the sun or the rain, we can be sure that back in ancient Egypt they used the umbrella as a religious or ceremonial item.

We now use umbrellas for one simple reason, to stay dry; but back in the day umbrellas symbolized various things such as religious power and sexual agression.
